We wrote a blog post last month about the increase in demand all over the world for Nanny-PAs (or ‘nanangers’ as they have been nicknamed) but we are also increasingly looking to recruit Governesses and Tutors in private positions all over the globe – especially in places like Russia, the Middle East and across Europe.
For families that travel extensively, home schooling is often the very best option for the early years: a wraparound education system that is tailored to the individual child. So, who are we looking for? Both men and women, degree-educated with formal teaching qualifications and teaching experience as well as childcare qualifications. Many of our tutors and governesses have a PGCE but decide against a career (or gain experience and then move on from a career) in mainstream teaching, opting for the chance to travel the world, immerse themselves in new cultures, save a decent amount of money for the future and work closely with families as a dedicated tutor.
Those who secure these top-paid positions often speak more than one language – Mandarin is in particularly high demand – and tend to be strong all-rounders so a broad and immersive curriculum can be achieved at home. As tutors will accompany families all over the world as they travel, tutors and governesses who can ski are always popular, and once who can teach at least one musical instrument and coach games. Those with first-hand experience of the British (and overseas) public school systems, either as a teacher or as a student themselves, are also seen as a great asset as many tutors are tasked with preparing children for entrance exams and interviews and researching schools and entrance criteria.
Governesses and tutors in private households are also often responsible for all the other life skills children are taught within the traditional school environment: etiquette and manners and social development. Individuals who can demonstrate the very best in manners, etiquette and social skills themselves – along with all the right qualifications, work and life experience – are often the ones picked for the top jobs.
Tutors can often expect to be provided with their own separate accommodation and a flight allowance for trips home as well as those aforementioned, excellent salaries.
