  • The Case of Joshua Paul

We were deeply saddened to hear the case of shaken baby Joshua Paul in the press recently, and we wanted to offer our thoughts on this desperately sad event from the perspective of a nanny agency.

  • Travel Delays and Disruptions

This summer it’s likely that you will travel with your employers at least once. Many of our nannies are seasoned fliers, working with families who take to the sky on a monthly or even weekly basis. But with a recent spate of flight disruptions and crises reported in the press, we thought we should talk about planning for and managing delays, disputes and disruptions with children to care for.

  • Teachers’ Thank You Gifts for the End of Term

As a nanny you might be tasked with sorting out thank you presents for teachers as the end of term draws near. If you want to avoid the usual box of chocolates or bottle of wine, here are some unique and thoughtful ideas.

  • Client Confidentiality, NDAs and VIPs

Singer Charlotte Church made the headlines recently for placing an advert for a nanny, which blew her cover in under one hundred words. Her self-penned advert left very little to the imagination and soon the press got hold of the advert and the news that Ms Church is expecting her third child. Clients often advertise privately in the first instance but then move to an agency when they realise that this is the only way to attract a crop of quality candidates and save a huge amount of time and effort. Here are a few things to think about, whether you are a nanny about to start working with a VIP family, or if you are a potential new employer with privacy concerns.

  • Recording a Video Profile: Our Five-Minute Guide

Employers are increasingly asking to see prospective nannies’ video profiles before shortlisting for interview. It’s no wonder, really – we have Skype, Snapchat, Stories and Facetime, so as a society we’re becoming more and more comfortable with presenting ourselves on-screen and in moving image. You may, like all our nannies, have a superb CV with glowing references, but a video profile enables a potential employer to gain a snapshot of you in as little as two minutes. We understand that this is both an encouraging and an intimidating prospect, so here’s a quick guide to recording a great video profile that’ll bag you that interview – and hopefully your next dream nanny job.

  • Etiquette for Leaving a Job

Good etiquette when it is time to leave a nanny appointment: All good things must come to an end, as they say – and saying goodbye to a family is part and parcel of a nanny’s job. Whether you’re moving on for your own reasons or if your employers are ready to let you go, this can be an emotional time: children must say goodbye to a special someone who has potentially been with them since they were babies. For our nannies, it is time to bid farewell to the children you have cared for so brilliantly, and move on to pastures new. For employers, it’s an unsettling time as a brand new home-life routine is anticipated, and one without their capable nanny to hand. We wrote recently about starting a new nanny role with your best foot forward, but it’s just as important to move on in style. Here are a few practical pointers on how to exit in style.

  • New Nanny Job Essentials

With so many new nanny vacancies coming up at Nannies of St James every week, it’s a good moment to pause and think about how to put your best foot forward in a new role. • Health Hazards... In an English Country Garden

As the weather improves and we find ourselves playing outside more with the children, it’s important to know what’s lurking in your employers’ gardens. In amongst the rose beds and the herbaceous borders there may be leaves and berries that can cause upset tummies and worse if little people get their hands on them. Here are some of the offending plants and shrubs to watch out for.

  • Raising Boys

For most women, getting in touch with their inner 5-year-old boy is a challenge. The mindset and thought process of a responsible adult and rampaging little man can sometimes feel like two jigsaw puzzle pieces that just won’t fit together, no matter how hard you try. Well read on….!

  • New Paediatric First Aid Legislation

On the 1st September 2016, a new law rolled out nationwide to ensure that for the first time ever, all newly qualified staff with a childcare qualification must be trained in vital, lifesaving paediatric first aid. Nannies of St. James wholly supports this new law and all our candidates hold up to date DBS and first aid training certificates, which must be renewed every 3 years. We accept candidates with standard first aid credentials but paediatric first aid certificate holding nannies are preferable for family placements.
